Things That Make Your Living Room Look Cheap (Avoid These)

Your living room is one of those rooms in your house that you really want to get right. It's a common room, and where many of your guests will be, so making it look it's best is key.

But what should you avoid? You'll not want it to look cheap, so these are the things which make your living room look cheap that you'll want to avoid.

  • Clutter In Room
  • Lighting
  • Cheap Looking Furniture
  • Visible Cables
  • No Layers
  • Cluttered Walls

Clutter In Your Room

There's no doubt that clutter is the number 1 enemy when it comes to your living room looking cheap.

Too many things, lots of small items, and a generally busy looking space.

Lighting - Avoid One Big Light

Lighting is really key in any room. You want to avoid one large light, which gives a harsh light. This makes your space look uninviting

Cheap Looking Furniture

The only thing worse than cheap looking furniture is cheap feeling furniture, so avoid both. Plastic looking furniture, cheap finishes and furniture which obviously doesn't fit (either too big or small) is something to avoid.

Visible Cables Look Messy

I love tech, and we live in a modern tech world, and that comes with cables. Having lots of visible cables on show in your living room makes the place look like a mess.

No Layers

Having everything the same colour, matchy-matchy furniture, the same colour shelves and paint, everything blends in - This gives off cheap vibes.

Cluttered Walls

One of my personal pet peeves is cluttered walls. I love living room art prints, and they're spectacular when you get them right. One large print, a classic gallery wall which fits in the space, it looks impressive.

But when people over-do this, have tons of pictures up on the wall, and mixed with other wall details such as clocks and small mirrors, it all goes wrong.

Don't clutter the wall, ensure you have lots of negative space, and let your wall decor breathe.

What To Do Instead

  • De-clutter - Make sure your place is free of clutter, embrace empty spaces
  • Lighting - Use warm lighting and several lights in the ceiling, or avoid completely with lamps and surround lighting
  • Premium Looking Furniture - Swap plastic looking furniture with modern fabrics or leather.
  • Hide all visible cables with trunking, or channel them into walls
  • Layer your lighting, fabrics and textures in the room
  • Keep walls looking clutter free, with only key pieces being chosen for your wall.

With that said, avoid all of these things if you don't want your living room to look cheap. Take a look at our guide on how to make your living room look more expensive on a budget, and you'll instantly see an upgrade if you follow these tips.
