Oioi, Areet and howay the lads! The Geordies are a friendly bunch, it's a fact, or is it? We have our own language and speak what's on our mind.
There's plenty of stereotypes that many have about the people of Newcastle, but how many are true, and how many Geordie stereotypes are just myths or fiction.
Geordies Are Friendly
Fact
Geordies and generally everyone in Newcastle are a friendly bunch. This isn't just a stereotype, it's just true. Almost everyone knows this, and people who visit from the south and places like London always say what a friendly bunch we are.
Geordies Have Their Own Language
Fact
While we of course everyone in Newcastle speaks English, the Geordie dialect is something you'll hear all the city (or Toon!).
our very own Geordie prints pay homage to the Geordie accent and dialect, with the most popular words being hung and framed in houses all over Newcastle. It's something you'll get used to hearing, and you'll know your wey eyes from your alreet pets in no time at all.
Geordie Is Hard to Understand
Fiction
The Geordie accent can be strange to get your head around at first, but the good thing is, most people are used to hearing it. Thanks Ant & Dec, Byker Grove and everything else from Newcastle that's been in the media for so long.
It's not really hard, but of course we have our own words just like many dialects in the UK. Our Geordie Dictionary breaks down what everything means.
Geordies Don't Wears Coats, Even In Winter
Fiction
This one is a bit of a fact, and fiction, or we can call it an urban myth. It kind of depends on your age, but on a night out in Newcastle, younger people are known for not wearing coats in winter. But as we age, we definitely start to feel the cold, and perfectly normal (and recommended!) for people to wear coats when they're out in winter.
Geordies Love Greggs
Fact
Did you even know that Greggs is from the North East? It's one of the Geordies best success stories. Once a small baker where we'd go as kids for a cheese and onion pasty or sausage roll has now become a national and cultural icon.
All hail the Greggs sausage roll.

Fact
Newcastle has some of the best nightlife the UK has, and we Geordies get to enjoy it every weekend.
Everyone in Newcastle works really hard Monday to Friday, but when the weekend comes, it's time to party. There's tons of bars, clubs and places to go, and Newcastle's nightlife is well known to be amazing.
Geordies Loves Football
Fact
There's only one football team in this city, Newcastle United. Almost everyone loves football, talks about football, and lives for football. If you like football and have nothing in common with anyone, you can still talk about the football.
If you love the black and white stripes, you'll love it here. Howay the lads!
It's Grim Up North
Fiction
Grim up North? I don't think so! The North East has blue flag beaches to enjoy in the summer, brilliant scenery to explore and of course the city of Newcastle itself. There's culture, always something to do and is a great place to live.
The weather, well yeah we can't say anything about that, but grim, not at all!
We Talk To Anyone And Everyone
Fact
There's no doubt that the Geordies are a talkative bunch. We love nothing more than a good natter, whether that's with our friends and family or even complete strangers.
Geordies Have The Best Banter
Fact
We love a good joke, with each other or at own expense. Geordies love banter, and having a laugh with friends and strangers alike. We're a happy
We All Drink Newcastle Brown Ale
Fiction
While Newcastle Brown Ale is drank by many locals, this isn't drank by everyone. In fact, it's not drank by many at all.
You'll find a wide range of drinks when you go to bars and restaurants. Everything from pints to bottles of beer, cocktails and spirits, and of course there'll be some "Newkie Broon" somewhere.
Geordies Are Proud To Work Hard
Fact
Geordies are proud to be working class and work hard, and value everything from hard work to family time. People in Newcastle don't just work hard for themselves but work hard for their families and are proud of it.
And there you have it, most the Geordie stereotypes and which are facts, and which are fiction.
There can be no doubt that most of the good stereotypes of Geordies are true, and some of the older ones, aren't.
